Wenatchee is the County seat of Chelan County, Washington. Wenatchee is located on the Columbia River, near the mouth of the Wenatchee River. "Wenatchee" is a Native American word "wenatchi" meaning "river flowing through canyon". Although it has a population of less than 30,000, Wenatchee is the economic hub of Chelan, Okanogan and Douglas counties. The local economy centers on apples and cherries. Wenatchee prides itself as the "Apple Capitol of the World." Wenatchee has experienced steady growth since irrigation was brought to the area nearly 100 years ago. Tourism is the biggest non-agricultural industry in the Wenatchee area.

Wenatchee's airport, Pangborn Field, is located across the Columbia River in East Wenatchee. In October, 1931, Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon made the first non-stop flight across the Pacific Ocean. They flew from Japan to Wenatchee, WA. Overloading the plane with fuel to make the journey, forced them to jettison their landing gear in mid-flight over the ocean. They had no life raft, radio, or oxygen aboard. Nevertheless, they made the trip seafely, making a belly landing on the sandy airstrip outside Wenatchee.
